Much has been made of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's statement that he is not "concerned about the very poor," but I saw something else in his quote. Metro published my observation on February 3, 2012.

While folks are upset that Mitt Romney stated he isn't "concerned about the very poor." I'm surprised there isn't more of an uproar that he isn't "concerned about the very rich" either. After all, his super PAC has raised almost $18 million from only 181 donors. I just hope Romney's plans to reduce or eliminate the corporate tax and capital gains rates will help smooth things over.

Some believe any amount of whitewashing sends a damaging message - and the star should know better by now." The Daily News printed my response on January 21, 2012.

Whether or not Beyonce intentionally allowed her skin to be lightened for some photo shoots, the debate alone over the possibility demonstrates the power we unfortunately invest in skin color. Beyonce should have the freedom to adapt her appearance as she sees fit, even if it may play into a damaging stereotype. It will always be within her power to make other statements with her appearance if she so chooses.

I was disappointed in a question asked of Herman Cain at a recent Republican presidential debate. Mr. Cain has been declaring his unqualified innocence after a number of sexual harassment complaints against him in the past surfaced. Prior to the debate, the Associated Press described the Cain campaign's response to one of his accusers: "Cain's campaign quickly pounced Tuesday on her background, detailing for reporters a hodgepodge of county and federal court cases. The campaign drew a contrast between Cain's 'four decades spent climbing the corporate ladder' and Ms. Bialek's financial woes." The Daily News published my alternate debate question on November 13, 2011.

Unfortunately, Maria Bartiromo asked presidential hopeful Herman Cain the wrong question at Wednesday's Republican debate. I would have preferred to hear Mr. Cain's answer to this question: If it is reasonable, as you have suggested in prior statements, that the financial difficulties of one of your sexual harassment accusers may suggest another motive for her charges, is it not also reasonable to conclude that, based on the four claims that have surfaced so far, there may be some validity to the sexual harassment charges against you?

Two American icons passed away on October 5. Steve Jobs is being widely andf rightfully celebrated for his influence on culture and technology. But deserving of equal attention is the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a fearless leader and participant in the civil rights movement. His contribution to the present cultural fabric and moral compass of this country is vast and redeeming. Mr. Jobs may have altered the way we communicate, but the Rev. Shuttlesworth helped change the way we treat each other.

I am an atheist, and I am very disappointed in the group American Atheists for opposing the inclusion of a surviving section of beams in a 9/11 museum because the structure has been associated with a Christian cross. This remnant was not constructed to be a religious symbol and is in fact an appropriate document of the tragedy and the reactions it caused. Unfortunately, in choosing this battle, the members of American Atheists seem, ironically, more like religious extremists.

I wrote a letter to Metro in response to an article about the Westboro Baptist Church, known for their anti-gay activities and penchant to picket. Metro published my response (thankfully unedited) on July 25, 2011.

Occasionally, I have had some responses to my letters printed the next day. In some cases (very rare) that letter results in yet another published response. It's like skipping stones across the letters page. The published letter is the first skip and each letter in response is a skip. The letter I had printed in Metro had four skips.

It is no surprise that the Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting gay weddings on the first day of marriage equality in New York. Frankly, same-sex marriage is the kind of activity that should rile up small minded, sanctimonious and bigoted people. That is how we know that justice has prevailed.

Happy to see so much exposure for issues such as marriage equality, I took the primary theme and sentence from my letter published that day in the Daily News and built a second letter around it commending the efforts of Gaga and Metro. In some ways, this unintentional passing of the torch represents the direction of the country. On April 20, 2011, I read the following in Metro: A lawsuit seeking to stop McDonald's Corp. from offering toys with Happy Meals must be dismissed because parents can always choose not to buy the meals for their children, the hamburger giant said in a court filing. The lawsuit accuses McDonald's of unfairly using toys to lure children into its restaurants. The plaintiff, a Sacramento, California mother of two, charges that the company's advertising violates California consumer protection laws.

I submitted this opinion and Metro published the letter on April 21, 2011.

While I support giving children healthy food choices, the lawsuit against McDonald's seeking to remove the toy from the Happy Meal is a downer. The entire restaurant is a child lure, starting with its clown spokesperson. I don't see how the absence of a toy would significantly change McDonald's target audience. Isn't the onus on parents and caregivers to supervise a child's nutritional needs?

On April 15, 2011, I read this article in the Daily News: Donald Trump unleashed more scorn for President Obama yesterday - but insisted it had nothing to do with race because he has a "great relationship with the blacks." Trump said he was dismayed by Obama's strong support within the African-American community. "I know many Obama supporters," he said. "I have a great relationship with the blacks, but unfortunately the (poll) numbers that you cite are very, very frightening numbers." Trump also continues to trumpet debunked "birther" theories about Obama being born in Kenya.

I find it somewhat perplexing that Donald Trump touts his great relationship with "the blacks" and in the same breath criticizes African-American support of President Obama as "frightening." Perhaps he should have a discussion with his good friends, "the blacks," and explain how he, a man who fans the flames of birther conspiracy despite clear evidence to the contrary, will bring calm and stability to the country.

U.S. Representative Peter King is holding a congressional hearing to discuss Muslim radicalism and the failure of Muslim leadership to cooperate in terrorism investigations. Witnesses recounting cooperative and uncooperative efforts are expected to testify.

Metro ran a cover story on a protest in Times Square over these hearings on March 7, 2011. In the same issue, an unrelated letter was printed addressing religious tolerance. I drew a connection between the two and wrote a letter that Metro published the next day.

Re: "We're not all hateful jerks." John Hemphill's letter was serendipitous given the protest against Muslim extremist hearings in New York. Mr. Hemphill writes that the Westboro Baptist Church, which spews hate toward gays, may encourage some "to label all Christians as being extreme and hateful." The same reasoning could be applied to the Muslim congressional hearings. However, I doubt Congress would dare challenge the Christian community and those who may hold hateful views within it.

Chris E. wrote: Having raised two sons and having lived through the decades required to turn them into fine young men, I take exception to Elton John's assertion that he is a "father." His sexual orientation not withstanding, 63 year old men have no business bringing children into the world. This little tyke will have extraordinary opportunities, be well cared for, go to the best schools - that's laudable. But you're a guardian, Elton. Don't elevate yourself to father status.

When you state that Elton John's "sexual orientation notwithstanding," and question, by virtue of his demanding schedule, his right to call himself "father" to his biological son, you are affirming that he cannot be a father in name because he is both gay and a busy, famous person. Are we to assume then that a heterosexual businessman who travels, works long hours and defers parenting to others is still a legitimate father? Or would you insist that he refer to himself as a "guardian" as well?

The story, as presented by the Daily News: Cops booted an unruly group of city teachers union officials from a posh Albany eatery after they caused a ruckus over their dinner tab. Paul Egan, the union's political and legislative director, set off the fracas - claiming the quail he was served, and finished, wasn't large enough. To hustle the scene-makers out of the dining room, restaurant managers reduced the bill for the group's prix fixe dinners before police escorted them out. My response was published in the Daily News Voice of the People on February 18, 2011.

While the behavior of United Federation of Teachers official Paul Egan may appear obnoxious, his boisterous complaints in an Albany eatery have actually suggested an effective method of saving money during these hard economic times ("Where's the beef?" Feb. 16). If he was successful in getting his bill reduced due to his vociferous protests, his strategy could be useful to those of us looking to save on dining expenses. Of course, there is a subtlety to the process that Egan neglected; the argument should stop short of necessitating police intervention.

Perhaps a new penal law category needs to be added for Lindsay Lohan's unique and high profile legal problems. I suggest the word "felohany" be applied to crimes committed by a perpetrator who "borrows" jewelry or clothes but still serves as a fashion role model when making court appearances. With the number of white minidresses sold following Lohan's recent arraignment, clothing designers will be anxious to outfit the next felohany celebrity.

Following the repeal of "don't ask don't tell," I received an email from President Obama celebrating this victory for the country (okay, he wasn't writing to me personally - I'm on the mailing list). "The fight for civil rights, a struggle that continues," he wrote, "will no longer include this one." Of course I was pleased with the change, but my commitment to marriage equality reigned in my enthusiasm. I wrote this letter with his email (which oddly didn't address the marriage issue) in mind and sent it to USA TODAY, where a number of my letters concerning gay marriage have been printed. The letter was published on December 27, 2010 in the middle of a blizzard in New York City, and I was unable to find the paper that day. Thanks to my mother, who mailed me a copy from Texas.

Repealing "don't ask don't tell" is indeed an important step forward for gay Americans and for this country. But the celebration wanes quickly because the ultimate bar to equality - the ban on gay marriage - has yet to be lifted. President Obama kept his promise to do away with "don't ask don't tell," but bringing about marriage equality remains the test of his convictions. Then, and only then, can the president claim a true civil rights victory.

"Mark Madoff, son of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff, was found dead of an apparent suicide on the second anniversary of his father's arrest. He was found hanged with a dog leash (as) his 2 year old slept in an adjacent room."

Perhaps the fact that the arrest and the suicide occurred on my birthday contributed to my prickly rejoinder. But I think it was the father in me that fueled this harsh appraisal.

While Mark Madoff's selfish suicide may have ended his own personal pain, his legacy of dysfunction will no doubt haunt the lives of his children. Despite the ample resources at Madoff's disposal, they deserved much more from their father. Even if he proves to be guiltless in the elder Madoff's fraud, his cowardly exit from life assures him a well deserved place in history next to his infamous father.

Columnist Dorothy Robinson invited reader comments on Oksana Grigorieva's planned appearance on Oprah, in which her singing and piano playing during the show was required in exchange for her discussing her turbulent relationship with Mel Gibson. Ms. Robinson asked "if Oksana ever loved Gibson or if she was with him in order to further her career." I saw her point, but I took a different approach. The story: Carl Paladino, the Tea Party supported Republican nominee for New York Governor, said Democratic rival Attorney General Andrew Cuomo lacks the "cojones" to debate him. "Don't hide behind daddy's coattails," wrote Paladino in an open letter to Cuomo, referring to Cuomo's father, three-term governor Mario Cuomo. "For the first time in your life be a man."

(The Daily News, September 24, 2010) I was not surprised that Carl Paladino challenged Andrew Cuomo's manhood and questioned his possession of certain reproductive organs. Paladino has already shown what kind of man he is, from his penchant for trafficking in offensive emails (he compared African tribal dances to President Obama's inauguration) to his exploiting tragedy for political gain (he equated health care reform with 9/11). And in terms of missing organs, Paladino may be the expert, as his most important organ seems to go AWOL whenever he speaks.

U.S. District Justice Vaughn Walker's decision to overturn the biased ban on gay marriage enacted by California's Proposition 8 demonstrates that the sensible mind of one can still prevail over irrational actions of many. While the judge's ruling will be contested, the message is clear. Marriage equality is not about religion or "traditional" values. Ms. Sherrod's story of humanity triumphing over racism was misrepresented by a biased blogger and taken for the truth by folks who should have known better.

The tale of Shirley Sherrod's maliciously edited statements and the overreaction they incited is really the tail of racism being chased by itself. The ease with which this civil rights activist was pilloried exposes the fear and ignorance of those who enabled the intentional fraud. Meanwhile, aw we watch this pathetic race dog snap at its own bait, legitimate claims of discrimination may be left to howl in vain.

On July 15, 2010, Newsday published my thoughts on the Rev. Jesse Jackson's racially-tinged defense of basketball star Lebron James from disparaging remarks made by his former employer. This is the full letter, which was trimmed slightly in printed form.

If charges of racial animus by the Rev. Jesse Jackson against Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert are true, then we must be convinced that Mr. Gilbert (who described Lebron James as narcissistic, disloyal and a coward) would have treated a nonblack player in similar circumstances with less vitriol. If Mr. Gilbert is simply an irate employer who vented after Mr. James' disappointing decision to leave his team, then the Rev. Jackson, using inflammatory words like "plantation" and "slave," may himself demean Mr. James by unnecessarily wrapping him in the protective shroud of our lamentable racist past. I would hope other evidence, if any, of Mr. Gilbert's propensity for disparate treatment would be presented along with the allegations. Otherwise, the Rev. Jackson may as well challenge the concept of a team "owner" alone as an unwanted vestige of slave life.

Re "City says 'I do' to gays," May 17: While creating a marriage-like ceremony for civil unions recognizes the need to celebrate through ritual the joining of two lives, we should not confuse this well-intended idea with true equality for gays who participate. Had this proposal been attempted during the movement for women's suffrage, it would have been akin to giving women the ability to vote, go to the polls on Election Day and pull the levers - in essence, participate in the pageantry of the electoral process - but not permit their votes to actually count. I applaud creative approaches, but the only acceptable solution to this injustice is marriage equality.

While I understand those who criticize the failure to capture the Times Square terrorist before he'd already boarded a plane bound for Dubai, I can't help but relish his private world of terror as he breathed a sigh of relief while passing through security, entered the plane, was seated, and congratulated himself on his perfect escape - just before his heart froze and his arrogance was shattered. It may not be top-notch security, but it will play better in the movie.

Every so often, I have periods where I can't seem to get a letter published. My past five or six alone to Metro were acknowledged but not printed. I wrote this letter as a palette cleansing exercise and half-hoped it would not be published, if only to show I didn't need to resort to risque humor to see "David Terhune, Brooklyn" back in the letters pages. Of course, the letter is published, with an accompanying photo no less, and I am left to ponder the significance of the situation. But thank you, Metro, for printing my earth-shaking letter on April 28, 2010.

I hadn't been aware of Casey Johnson until I saw the headlines announcing her death. When I read of the Johnson & Johnson heiress's love for dogs, and that she had left college and a job because she was not allowed to keep dogs, I had a vision of her that I thought would make a good letter (and allow me to pay a secret homage to Albert Payson Terhune). I was very upset when I heard on the radio that the New York State Senate had defeated the Marriage Equality Act 38 votes to 24. I wasn't surprised, but I was still saddened that so many senators would choose to vote against the civil rights of a significant portion of Americans. On the subway while I took my daughters to school, I punched out this letter on my blackberry, and it captured my frustration and disappointment. The Brooklyn Paper featured my letter on May 29, 2009.

I enjoyed the photo of the newly married Brooklyn couple who took their wedding party on the 6 train after the ceremony (The Brooklyn Paper 5/15). Their marriage will always bear the special stamp of their unique personalities and union. But I couldn't help feeling disappointed that the duo could not also be a same-sex couple. Certainly a gay couple could make a similar scene on a subway train, but that pair could not get married and then cause a scene on the train. The fate of that scenario now rests with the New York State Senate. The Marriage Equality Bill has been rushed according to some, and the Senate does not appear to have sufficient support to pass the measure at present. But I remain hopeful that our state senators will see this bill as an opportunity to remind the nation that all citizens must be treated without bias under the law. Gay New Yorkers pay taxes and contribute to the state economy as do other law-abiding citizens, and their right to express love and commitment through the institution of marriage should not be abridged.

When Vice President Biden stated that President Obama would be "tested" early in his presidency, he did not realize that the attack would come from Republicans rather than a hostile foreign government. Re Jeff Stone's letter (Metro 2/24) examining AG Eric Holder's remarks concerning race dialogue in America. Mr. Stone was hoping for more of a road map from Holder and recommended skilled facilitators to help guide productive race discussions. However, the core of Holder's message was that the social worlds of blacks and whites have remained largely segregated even as we have seen great advances in civil rights legislation and integrated workplaces. While race discourse can be thorny, friends may not need the aid of professionals to talk, listen and learn from each other. Gaining awareness through social interaction is the challenge AG Holder has placed before the country.

Civil rights were both bolstered and befuddled in 2008. Barack Obama represented to many the manifestation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's vision for America. But the passage of Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage in California sadly demonstrated the still powerful effect bias wields over the concept of equal treatment under the law. Hopefully, the good sense that put Obama in office will also guide us in addressing the rights of gay couples.

My friend Michael Meyers, Executive Director of the New York Civil Rights Coalition, had a response to my letter printed in amNY on January 5, 2009. Unfortunately, the newspaper editted out that reference (space considerations, no doubt). The letter in its original form:

David Terhune (Letters, Jan. 2) rightly condemns anti-gay bigotry in America as a low point of 2008, especially with the passage of California's Proposition 8 that rendered same-sex marriage illegal. While the California Supreme Court will likely invalidate that referendum as an impermissible deprivation of people's civil rights, the blunder of Barack Obama (whose own electoral victory constituted a victory over bigotry and presaged a new era in race relations) stands unchallenged by the rule of law, and with no apology or change of heart by Obama for inviting Pastor Rick Warren, whose ministry preaches against equality before the law for gays, and others, in the guise of religiosity, to give the invocation at Obama's Inauguration. Besides being yet another glaring example and argument for the principle that religion should be separated from government and secular affairs, Obama's stance that he may (on the questionable grounds that he is a "fierce" supporter of gay rights) legitimize and empower religious bigots by inviting the #1 apostle of anti-gay bigotry on to the First Stage is a giant step backwards for civil rights and egalitarianism.

I sent Metro an op-ed, and they printed this "letter" (October 27, 2008) drawn from the first paragraph. It doesn't really work as a letter. Here's the op-ed:

Early in his campaign, Barack Obama predicted that if he did not win the presidency, it would not be due to his color but that he was unable to convince the American people of his vision and competence. To say that race would not play a role in the first presidential election featuring a major party black candidate is at best optimistic. Given studies, such as Project Implicit, that show Americans more often than not associating negative descriptions with people of color, Senator Obama’s battle is most assuredly an uphill one. And yet, despite facing what many have called the dirtiest campaign ever waged, Obama has remained true to his ideal of how a candidate should present him or herself to the electorate. And in an anomaly rarely seen in American politics, integrity seems to be winning.

The presidential debates allowed Obama to demonstrate his civility and intelligence, even as John McCain increased his attacks with every face-off. Time and again, when the bait was offered, Obama took the high road, much to the frustration of his supporters who wanted Obama to show more fire. During the first debate, I cringed every time Obama said, “Senator McCain is right, but…” And in the final debate, when he was given the opportunity to assess Sarah Palin’s presidential qualifications, Obama said he would leave that up to the voters to decide. What? Waste this golden opportunity? But Obama was right. He was polite, and his composure and the content of his responses came off as much more presidential than McCain’s angry snipes (“That one!”) and frequent grimaces.

The McCain campaign has in essence portrayed Obama as an elitist, inexperienced, unpatriotic friend of terrorists. These politics of fear and falsehoods have helped put many recent Republicans in the White House. Strategy-wise, Obama could have taken a page from their dirty tricks playbook and hoped for the same results the McCain team desires. But Barack Obama has defined his campaign on his own ethical terms. Win or lose, he ran the campaign he set out to run, unlike McCain, who once eschewed underhanded political chicanery until he realized (or was convinced) that his future depended upon those same despicable deceits. An Obama victory will ultimately be a victory for the character and decency Americans can show. A McCain election will confirm that cynicism and suspicion drive the country. I will be voting for respect and virtue. I will be voting for Barack Obama.
