Letters and Opinions

These are opinion pieces that I have had published in a variety of newspapers and magazines. I have been writing letters-to-the-editor since 2006, and have had over 160 published since then. I also play guitar and sing in a musical revue called The Loser's Lounge. With a cast of guest singers, we perform tributes to great songwriters and bands. The show is in its 24th year, and we perform at Joe's Pub - The Public Theater and Lincoln Center in New York City.

I've written a number of unpublished letters supporting gay marriage, but I finally had one printed in USA Today on August 15, 2007.

A friend of mine called this "mushy," but I promised myself that I would try to make positive statements in my letters when I had the opportunity. amNY gave me this chance on August 15, 2007. Okay, maybe it's a little mushy...

The day after my amNY letter, Metro published this opinion. It was the first time these two papers (in which I've had most of my letters appear so far) printed back-to-back letters. And it all happened on August 8 and 9, 2007.

I've been very lucky to have most of my letters printed unedited. Whether for space or brevity, amNY left out the second half of my final sentence in this letter. Although it doesn't suffer for the omission, I include it here:

"...rather than acknowledging her capabilities and potential as an intelligent young woman."

I was very moved by this cover from the July 30, 2007 edition of Newsweek and composed this letter while trying to get my family on the road to attend my brother's wedding in Long Island. I was honored that Newsweek chose to start their letters page with my piece.
Dedicated to Jeremy and Sarah, married July 28, 2007.
